Boston Whaler Outrage with Verado's

Ted Rankine: When people mention the name Boston Whaler for many of us, the first image that comes to mind is that 1961 picture of founder Richard Fisher cutting his Whaler in half with a cross cut saw.
Well it's been more than 40 years, and there's no doubt that Richard's little Whaler has come a long way since then. At 32-feet in length, the Outrage is the largest outboard model that Boston Whaler has produced to date. And is certainly one of the most impressive fishing fighters in Whaler's unsinkable history.

Before we head out, let's take a look at some of the features of the outrage here at the dock. And of course, some of the most prominent features are located on the transom. This outrage is equipped with a Pair of 250hp Mercury Verado's.Now these motors are part of Mercury's Project X, in which they developed the world's first 4-stroke, supercharged outboard power. Now in the aft cockpit there is a doublewide bench seat, which folds up out of the way to give plenty of room for fighting fish.
Now the Outrage is a very serious fishing boat, with lots of room to store fish, rods, and even has really solid toe rail for fighting the fish. Just behind the helm, there is the bait station with a cutting board, sink and a very deep live well. Underneath the baiting station there is plenty of storage for your tackle, and the boat even comes complete with a number of tackle boxes.
You know when the hosts of those fishing shows catch a fish and say, "nice fish"? Well that is the feeling I got when I saw this helm.
There is even a couple of very comfortable chairs, each with built in bolsters. Included is a lockable cabinet to keep your electronics out of the elements. This helm, although very futuristic looking, is simply laid out. There are switches for every system on the boat, as this boat is equipped with the Mercury Smart Craft system. It means it has got an electronic throttling and shifting control, and this smart view system will keep you in touch with all of the engine systems aboard the boat.
Moving forward you will find an enormous seating area. There is lots of room for those who want to sit facing forward, or those who want to lounge out.
And you know, when it comes to storage, this boat certainly does not lack it. There is vertical rod storage, with plenty of storage under all of the seating cushions. There is even another fish locker forward, with a very large dry locker.
Forward of the helm, below the console is a roomy enclosed head, and hand held shower with vertical rod storage.
Propping this new Mercury power is a pair of 17-inch Revolution stainless steel 4 bladed propellers. You know, with this new Mercury Verado power it is so quiet, the only way you can tell that it is running, is by the water telltale.
There is no denying that the Boston Whaler has really got their act together with this boat. It is as good-looking as it is well designed as a serious fishing boat.
Out on the ocean as I tried a hole shot, this is really where the new Mercury 4-stroke Verado power showed its muscle. Bringing this 10,000 plus pound boat beyond plane and hitting 30 mph in just over 12 seconds.
Rough water gave me a chance to try out the Boston Whaler's exclusive active deck system, which suspends a portion of the deck on pneumatic cylinders. Acting as shock absorbers to dampen out rough water, a great feature for those of us still long on adventure, but short on good Knees.
Boston Whaler has built the Outrage with a refined version of their Accutrak hull. Combining a deep v hull with a sharp angle of entry to provide for a great ride in rough water, unfortunately something we did not see today in the ocean just out of Miami.
The Outrage tracked well through the turns, with no slipping or skidding. As far as the numbers were concerned, this Whaler was impressive with the new Verado power. We did 0 to 30 in 12.29 seconds at a comfortable 4,000rpm, we were cruising at 26.1 mph, and a quiet sound level of Only 82 dB. At 6,000 rpm, we saw 47 mph and had a helm sound level of only 88 dB.
If you are looking for fishability, ruggedness, performance and comfort you cannot do much better than this Boston Whaler 32-foot Outrage. And you know, if you combine it with this mercury Verado Package, you have got fishing fun that is well, unsinkable.
