2000 HarrisKayot SuperDek
|
As the originator and builder of the FloteBote, HarrisKayot knows how to build space, comfort and convenience into boats. But HarrisKayot's new 240 SuperDek is also a stylish fibreglass day-cruiser with great performance and good looks. The Today's Boating test boat, put through its paces during a delivery run across Lake Muskoka, was powered by a V-6 Yamaha V225 two-stroke outboard with OX66 fuel injection. |

With speedy acceleration (0-30 mph in 8.4 seconds and 0-40 mph in 10.81seconds), a more-than-respectable radar-verified 48-mph top speed and easy cruising speeds in the 20- to 35-mph range, the SuperDek is no slouch in the performance department. (Remember too, that our tests were done with a half-tank of fuel and a "party load" of four fairly hefty fellows.)
A 19-degree-deadrise hull, with notched transom, a small step in the keel and a running pad, provides the kind of sea-keeping ability and nimble handling that's not often found in deckboats. Chine notches help initiate lift and keep spray down.
With a V-hull that flares out only at the bow to provide added foredeck room, a curvaceous deck mould, a white-with-blue-accents gelcoat color scheme and a wraparound windscreen, the SuperDek looks great.
But it's the space and conveniences that will get you aboard for a closer look and keep you there for a longer stay. Coming aboard or departing, you've got three choices -- step-downs from bow or stern , complete with fold-down ladders, or a step notched into the starboard gunnel forward. In the main cockpit, there's an enormous L-shaped lounge to port and - behind the swiveling helm seat, a small sink and food preparation area to starboard. A removable table turns the settee into an al fresco dining room.
For the ultimate in day-cruising convenience there's a small cabin to port, with moulded fibreglass liner, complete with a sink and telephone-style showerhead. There was no head on the test boat, but the space has obviously been designed for installation of a chemical toilet. There's a halogen light and an opening, screened porthole.
Forward, there's even more lounging space with spacious twin settees. It's a large but separate space, the sort of thing that endears deckboats to active boating families.
Storage? There's an cavernous locker forward of the helm, plenty of space beneath aft cockpit seats and three drained fibreglass-lined lockers under seats forward. And in the floor or the bow area, there's a "basement" big enough to hold skis, wakeboards and kneeboards -- and more.
Nice touches? They abound, including the wood-grain dash, padded stainless-steel steering wheel, a portable Igloo cooler in the locker behind the helm seat, the AM-FM CD player (part of a Preferred option package on the test boat that also included snap-in carpet and a digital depthfinder), a wind-blocking door to the bow area, built-in anchor locker forward and moulded fender-holders and drained swim-platform locker aft.
HarrisKayot clearly knows boaters want space, but also knows how to help them best use it.
